They were both marketed as a home speaker.(Model 14 & 9842-8D) Altec made a studio version of the 9842. The 9842-8A in the gray lacquer finish for recording studios,etc... Originally the 9842 was developed for the studio but then they came out with a home version with the (Walnut Veneer) the 9842-8D.
